Last year I regularly received rainfall records for Kurdistan from two sources, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Transport. This allowed me to compile regular reports on the rainfall across Kurdistan. This year, while I am in the UK for medical reasons, my assistant Miss Shawnam Zarar has spent a great deal of time trying to get information on rainfall but has only managed to get sketchy records from the Ministry of Transport allowing us to produce the information in the table below. This data comes from 69 stations throughout the 4 governorates. While there are limitations on the amount of data we have obtained this year, and there may be some discrepancies, these records at least offer an indication of the rainfall pattern and can be compared to those recorded last year.
I would appreciate receiving data from any other source and welcome any information, official or personal communication, to assist in predicting the climatic effect on this year’s wheat production. We should question whether we need to continue to subsidise local wheat production, (and some imported wheat), as heavily as we have done or can some of the subsidy allocated to wheat be directed to other needy sectors of agriculture in Kurdistan.
